Our Favourite Fabric: Harris Tweed
Being in the furniture trade for quite a few years, we have found that different fabric trends change quickly. However, Harris Tweed never disappears from the limelight.
If you are looking for a timeless piece of furniture, Harris Tweed fabric is the way to go. Here at Edmunds & Clarke Furniture we tend to use two tweeds, Hunting Lodge and Moreland combined with Cerato Leather. A beautiful combination.
These are mainly in our “Fast track” fabrics, meaning shorter lead times on our arm chairs & sofas. We have so many to choose from and they all have their own comfort level. From a large wing chair to a smaller arm chair, there is something for everyone!
Why Harris Tweed?
One of the most desirable wool textiles in the world, Harris Tweed, has a protected legal status meaning it can only bear this prestigious title when produced in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland; on the one island with two names, separated only by a mountain range – the islands of Lewis and Harris.
The story begins with pure virgin wools which are blended together to gain the advantages of their unique qualities and characteristics. Although the wool used to make Harris Tweed is principally taken from flocks reared on the mainland of Scotland, in the early summer the island communities join together to round up and shear the local sheep to add their locally reared wool to the mainland clip.
Using 100% pure virgin wool. It’s always woven by hand, and great care is taken to choose top-quality wools and dyes. That means that any sofa with this luxurious tweed covering will be exceptionally soft and comfortable, as well as stylish. Read more from the Harris Tweed Authority, its a very interesting read!
Above all Harris Tweed as a fabric is not just beautiful and comfortable, this pure wool also has many other benefits. It is naturally flame-retardant, breathable, stain-resistant and is resilient and elastic. And of course Harris Tweed is a great quality material. To see for yourself, why not order a free sample?
